Panoramic X Ray

Definition: a dental scan that uses very small doses of ionizing radiation to produce a two-dimensional image of the entire mouth, including the upper and lower jaw, the teeth and other surrounding structures.
Even if the view is captured in half a circle (from one ear to the other), the Panoramic X-ray produces a flat image.

The Panoramic X-ray is a common dental examination that helps the doctor diagnose conditions such as:

  • Impacted teeth - usually the wisdom teeth
  • Oral cancer in early stages
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder/jaw disorder
  • Jaw bone trauma or fracture
  • Periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Sinusitis or other sinus conditions
  • Orthodontic problems (pre- and post-intervention)
  • Salivary glands blockage
  • Preparation for any dental surgery

How does it work?

First of all you will be asked to put on a lead apron to protect you from radiation. After that, you will be standing or seated in the center of the mechanism, while the technician will position your head in a way that will fixate your chin and forehead to the device. You will be asked to bite on a special spatula to ensure the proper alignment of the teeth and stand still for a couple of seconds while the camera rotates in front of your head, from one side to another, taking the pictures.

What are the risks?

The radiation exposure is minimal, and if you have any concerns, the doctor should be able to help. If you are pregnant, the examination should be postponed unless it is absolutely necessary. In that case, you will be offered some protective lead equipment for your pelvic area during the exam.

How to prepare for the examination?

There is no special preparation for the examination other than taking off all the metal-containing objects on your head and neck, including eyeglasses, earrings, dentures or other orthodontic appliances, hair pins, and any jewelry.

How long does the examination take?

The examination takes a couple of minutes, including the preparation process.
