Teeth Whitening
How does it work?
The restoration of the natural teeth shade is performed by removing “stains” (from food, drinks, and tobacco) and tartar formed on the surface of your teeth. The whitening, on the other hand, is a procedure that lightens your teeth color by several shades.
What are the risks?
There are no major side effects to teeth whitening procedures, although there is a great risk of the increased sensitivity of the teeth and mild irritation of the gums caused by the bleaching agents.
What will the procedure be like?
There are 2 options of teeth whitening:
- Whitening products that either remove stains with the help of mild abrasives (toothpaste and mouthwashes), or hydrogen peroxide (whitening strips or gels). These products can be used at home, and the results can be seen in a couple of weeks.
- At the dentist's office, the whitening is performed by a specialist and may take more than one appointment. The procedure involves covering the gums with a protective gel and applying the bleaching agent (carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) on the surface of the teeth. These products can be used in combination with laser, heat or a special light.
How long does the procedure take?:
If you decide to use the home whitening kit, the process may take several weeks, while at the dentist's office, the whitening may take from one to four procedures (depending on the shade of your teeth).
How to recover after the procedure?
There is no special recovery from this procedure. The general recommendation for the lasting effect of whitening procedures and keeping healthy teeth is to avoid foods, drinks, and other substances that change the color of youth teeth.
