Flap With Root Resection

Definition: a surgical procedure in which the oral surgeon removes one or two of a molar’s damaged roots, only if the remaining ones are stable enough to hold the entire tooth. It is done in order to preserve the rest of the healthy tooth.
This procedure is performed on patients with severe root damage that cannot be managed via conventional endodontic treatment.

How does it work?

Before the procedure, it is required to perform an X-ray of the damaged tooth, as it will show the exact location and type of problem. 
First, the doctor will inject a local anesthetic to numb the area and the tooth itself. The proper work starts by cutting a piece of gum above the damaged tooth and then lifting the flap of the gum tissue that covers the bone structure. The procedure is followed by drilling a hole into the bone and therefore exposing the root of the tooth. Once the damaged root is exposed, the doctor drills and cuts it into pieces and then removes it. The newly-formed socket is then filled with a bone graft material which helps with rapid bone formation. The procedure ends by suturing the flap back.

What are the risks?

• Infection;
• Bleeding; 
• Failure of the procedure;
• Excessive mobility of the tooth after the procedure;
• Puncturing of the adjacent tissues;

How to prepare for the procedure?

• You are required to take an X-ray of the tooth;
• Don’t smoke or/and drink alcohol for at least 24 h before the procedure;

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure could take 2-3 hours, depending on the severity of the problem.

How to recover after the procedure?

• The doctor may prescribe antibiotics for a couple of days;
• During the first 3-4 days after the procedure, the gum tissue will feel sore and painful, which can be managed with painkillers and by avoiding hot, cold or spicy meals and drinks;
• The tooth becomes more sensitive, so avoid chewing with it;
• Provide good hygiene for your teeth;
• You will be required to take another X-ray for confirmation;
