History
IBCC Oncology is a private, non-profit charity, a pioneer in the control of breast and gynecological cancer. Its founder, Prof. Dr. João Sampaio Góes Junior, a gynecologist and hematologist, started the entity's activities in 1968 under the name of IBEPOG - Brazilian Institute of Studies and Research in Obstetrics and Gynecology. For 3 years, in the early 1970s, he led the then National Cancer Division, of the Ministry of Health, when he developed the National Cancer Control Program (PNCC). At this time, statutory reformulation was carried out, when the institution changed its name to the BRAZILIAN CANCER CONTROL INSTITUTE. On this occasion, his son, Prof. Dr. João Carlos Guedes Sampaio Góes, hematologist and plastic surgeon, joined the administration of IBCC as an instituting member along with his father.
The introduction of the term “CONTROL” as a philosophy of not only “COMBATING CANCER”, but of “CONTROLLING IT” throughout the epidemiological dimension. In this way, the IBCC acted fruitfully with the implementation of the largest cervical and breast cancer prevention program ever implemented by an institution, serving more than 2 million people.
IBCC's pioneering spirit is revealed not only in the aforementioned extensive prevention program but also in the installation of the first mammography device in Brazil, in 1971. Relevant research was carried out, such as the unprecedented work that determined the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as an agent cause of uterine cancer and the testing of the vaccine against this same virus, placing the IBCC at the forefront of the worldwide control of cervical cancer.
In 1988 the IBCC started to be managed by Sociedade Beneficente São Camilo, maintaining the technical and scientific activity under the coordination of its founding partners. Since then, numerous investments have been made in infrastructure, research, education, new technologies, and complex procedures. In 1995, the IBCC Oncologia became responsible for the campaign “Breast Cancer in the Target of Fashion” in Brazil. The resources coming from this Campaign allowed the growth and better qualification of your hospital in serving patients. In recent years many expansion works have been carried out, with the development of new oncological specialties and the structuring of the satellite units mentioned above.
The IBCC was considered by research carried out by the State Department of Health of the State of São Paulo, in 2007 and 2008, as the best hospital in humanized care and ranked among the 10 best hospitals in the State of São Paulo. He also received the “Hospital Best” Trophy in the Philanthropic Institution of the Year category in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. With this philosophy, he remains in constant search for the best care for patients.
