Sahlgrenska University Hospital was established on 1 January 1997 when the emergency hospitals Sahlgrenska, Östra, and Mölndal merged into one. The purpose of the merger was to make the best use of the combined resources for healthcare in Greater Gothenburg, in order to be able to ensure the resident's good since 1 January 1999, Sahlgrenska University Hospital has been part of the Västra Götaland region. The Västra Götaland region consists of the former county councils in Bohus, Älvsborg, and Skaraborg as well as parts of Gothenburg municipality. Health care is the region's largest branch of activity - about 91 percent of the region's budget is allocated to health care.
Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) provides emergency and basic care for the Gothenburg region, and its 700,000 inhabitants, and highly specialized care for Western Sweden, with 1.7 million inhabitants. SU is also the country's center for certain specialized care, especially in pediatrics (pediatric heart surgery, incubator care for premature babies, as well as the treatment in pediatric endocrinology). SU is also well known for its successful transplant activity, treatment of cardiovascular diseases, immunology (research into rejection mechanisms) as well as research into vaccines.
SU was founded in 1997 when three hospitals merged; Mölndal Hospital, Sahlgrenska Hospital, and Östra Hospital. Since 1999 Sahlgrenska University Hospital is a part of the Västra Götaland Region.
SU is one of six teaching hospitals with medical education in Sweden. The hospital provides the infrastructure necessary for teaching and research in cooperation with the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg.
