- Liposuction is a procedure that aims to remove stubborn fat from certain areas of the body that may not be eradicated with regular physical exercises and a healthy diet. 
The liposuction procedure may be performed either under general or under local anesthesia.
 When the procedure of liposuction is performed under general anesthesia the patient is asleep and an anesthetist controls his breathing and body function. General anesthesia is used in case the patient wants to combine more cosmetic procedures on the same day (for example a tummy tuck and a facelift). It is important to know that general anesthesia is riskier than local anesthesia and the risk of vein thrombosis higher. 
 When a local anesthetic is used the procedure is called tumescent liposuction. The patient is awake but he does not feel any discomfort and the risks created by general anesthesia are avoided. The local anesthetic has the following compounds: 
1. a bag of saline with lignocaine - to numb the area
2. adrenaline - to reduce bruising and bleeding 
3. bicarbonate to prevent the sting of the lignocaine
The benefits of local anesthesia are that this combination of substances(lignocaine, adrenaline, and bicarbonate) helps to lift the fat of the muscle wall making it more accessible for removal. Another advantage is that it reduces the risk of any severe complication. 
The areas where liposuction may be performed include the chin/neck, arms, chest in both sexes, upper and lower abdomen, hips, outer and inner thighs, ankles, calves, and the back.
