How often do I really need to have my teeth professionally cleaned?

I always wonder if this is just a trick to get people to come more often to the clinic. Imean I could do it at home right, what's the difference?

II've done it twice and I don't really feel comfortable going to denist, every time I end up paying more I thought it would be.
