Description

Balmain Hospital is a community-based healthcare facility located in Sydney, Australia that has been providing medical services to local residents since 1885. The hospital is dedicated to providing the highest standards of healthcare to meet individual needs, with a focus on Aged Care, Rehabilitation, and General Practice. The hospital operates within Sydney Local Health District and provides a wide range of services to the community.

One of the key services provided by Balmain Hospital is the General Practice Casualty (GPC) department. The GPC provides general practice services treating minor illnesses and injuries for patients when their regular General Practitioner is unavailable. The department is open from 8:00am to 10:00pm, Monday to Sunday, and is supported by an X-Ray Department from 9:00am to 4:30pm daily, as well as pathology services from Monday to Friday. The GPC is similar to a General Practice Clinic in the level of healthcare that staff can provide.

Another important service provided by Balmain Hospital is the rehabilitation department. The rehabilitation ward, called the John Beasley Ward, has 26 beds and is designed to help patients who have suffered from a stroke, a serious injury, or a brain tumor. Rehabilitation therapy can include care from medical specialists, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, occupational therapists, speech therapists, dieticians, and psychologists. The ward is staffed by doctors and nurses 24 hours a day, and patients are encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible, with the rehabilitation team there to support them.

In addition to the rehabilitation and GPC departments, Balmain Hospital also offers Aged Care, Transition Care, and Outpatients Department services. The hospital's two aged care wards, Lever Ward and Wakefield Ward, provide medical care managed by a Specialist Geriatrician, and the Transition Care Unit provides up to 12 weeks of inpatient support for older people who are medically stable but need to complete their recovery and organize their living arrangements. The Outpatients Department provides a variety of services, such as acupuncture, podiatry, and physiotherapy, to meet the health needs of the community.
